@LockeLadder

Most of the ideas that built Locke & Ladder started in this journal.

Early logo sketches.
Notes from Monday meetings.
And questions we had to answer before we ever wrote a single estimate.

Instead of putting it on a shelf to collect dust like a normal person, Jon ripped the spine out and turned the pages into the physical canvas you see here.

It’s messy. It’s layered. It’s intentionally imperfect.

Which feels about right for the start of anything meaningful.

But the questions written on those pages were surgical.

We weren’t trying to figure out how to sell more roofs. We were trying to figure out how to build a company we wouldn’t absolutely hate working for.

How do we build a crew that actually cares when no homeowner is watching?

How do we refuse to compromise on materials, even if it costs us the bid?

A lot of contractors slap the word “excellence” on the side of their truck. We don’t.

The roofing industry set the bar pretty low, and we had zero interest in just stepping over it. That standard has been there since page one.

Our fingerprints are in everything we do.

This Is What Real Cedar Looks Like at Year 20

We tear cedar off homes every month. And after doing it long enough, the pattern is always the same: curling shakes, cracking, moss underneath, water getting past the underlayment. The material that made the house beautiful is now the thing putting it at risk.

This post walks through what we actually see on these tearoffs. Two homes, one in Zionsville and one in Carmel, both beautiful homes, both with cedar that had crossed the line from character to liability.

The @bravarooftile composite cedar shake is molded from real cedar masters. Same texture, same hand-split look. Does not rot. Does not absorb water. Class 4 impact rated. We are not saying cedar is bad (although your insurance agency is). We are saying there is now something that keeps the beauty without the maintenance.
Every home has a story.

When we first met this homeowner, she told us that she felt embarrassed by the condition of the house.
It made her hesitant to invite people over, even family. So she didn’t.

After everything was finished, she shared something with us that we won’t forget.

That year, she hosted Thanksgiving at her house. For the first time in a long time, the house was full.
Family around the table. Conversations spilling out of the kitchen. Kids moving through the living room.

She told us that for the first time in years, she felt comfortable opening her home again. The work we did here gave her the freedom to celebrate with family without shame.

That’s the part of this work people don’t always see.

Yes, we replaced the roof, siding, and windows. But what matters more to us is what that work makes possible for the people living there.

From the beginning, our goal has been to do work that actually makes a difference.

To approach every project with care and a real desire to get it right. To build something lasting. Something we’d be proud to put our own name on.

And in the end, leave homeowners feeling proud of the place they call home.

Stories like this are a great reminder of why we care so much about getting it right.
What Does a New Roof Actually Cost?

We get this question every week. And every time, the homeowner has already gotten two or three quotes that are tens of thousands of dollars apart with no explanation why.

So we made this post to explain what we wish someone had explained to us when we were starting out. What a “square” is. Why the unit matters. Where some real cost differences come from. And why the lowest number on the page is almost never the best number for your house.

If you got a quote recently and the number felt wrong, or you got two quotes and they felt like they were for different houses then this is for you.

The roofing industry does not make this easy. We think it should be.

Won best in show @indianaflowerandpatioshow THANK YOU! Made our day 😁

@bravarooftile synthetic cedar and slate 🙌 it’s so pretty
THIS VIDEO IS MISLEADING. It’s not just windows, doors, roofing, or siding.

Our clients demand more and are more discerning.

While art school pounded craftsmanship into our brains…we believe craftsmanship should be the baseline.
(attentiontodetailattentiontodetailattentiontodetail)

Our desire for long term impact governs all product offerings, systems, expectations of excellence, and client experience. But this doesn’t just magically happen.

It must be baked in to the culture…and part of the DNA.

It requires integrity, which speaking of, we did not really hire a marketplace videographer. We made this video in house. House music also produced in house by @buffalotrucker and @jonstrandbrand
This industry doesn’t always have the best reputation. We know that.

That’s exactly why we built this company the way we did.

Our goal isn’t just to complete projects. It’s to raise the standard of what homeowners should expect.

Your house isn’t a transaction. It’s where your mornings start. Where your kids grow up. Where you go at the end of a long day. It deserves more than a rushed install and a handshake.

We believe in preparation. In slowing down enough to get the details right. In training our team well and expecting a lot from each other.

We don’t cut corners. We don’t push products we don’t believe in. And we don’t separate who we are from how we work.

For us, this work is bigger than roofing, siding, or windows. It’s about protecting the place where your life happens. And doing it with integrity, every single time.
Is a real cedar roof the right choice for your home?

Real wood looks beautiful on the first day. But it is a natural material, which means it acts like a giant sponge. When it rains, it soaks up water. When the sun beats down, it dries out and bends. Over time, it grows thick green moss and eventually rots. You have to spend time and money every single year just to keep it functioning.

If you want the rough, hand-split texture and deep shadows of real wood without the constant upkeep, composite cedar is a strong alternative. Materials like Brava Composite Cedar in the color Aspen are built from advanced polymers. They do not rot or fade in the sun. They bounce off heavy hail and keep your living room completely quiet during a violent Midwest storm.

Whether you are updating a historic estate in Carmel IN or designing a new build in Burr Ridge IL, picking the right roof means understanding how materials actually behave in the real world.
